North Sacramento, its own city up until 1964, is now made up of artsy and unique types of businesses, while maintaining its quaint small neighborhood charm. The Uptown District is the main street of commercial area in the former City of North Sacramento which was annexed into the City of Sacramento in 1964, and is comprised of Del Paso Boulevard, Arden Way and El Camino Avenue primarily. Much of this area is reminiscent of the 1940s, is part of the Historic Highway 40, a former main route from the Bay area to Reno during the mid 1900s.
This area began a major rebirth in the 1990s as an Arts District, with many other Gallery programs launched to promote the region. Today there are antique stores, art galleries, unique shops, upscale restaurants which act as a major draw to the local resident artists. The local Chamber of Commerce has been an active player and motivator in this area and has been responsible for much of the new business environment and newly discovered tourist trade.
